James advises on all aspects of corporate taxation including the structuring of domestic and international reorganisations, mergers and acquisitions, cross border tax planning and corporate restructurings.  He also advises on employment related taxes, tax issues arising in the context of insolvency and property related matters and the tax consequences of doing business in and from Ireland.

James is a dual qualified solicitor, chartered tax advisor and chartered accountant and is a member of the Law Society of Ireland, the Irish Taxation Institute and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland.

  • Advised Bord na Móna on the tax aspects of the launch of a new onshore wind energy joint venture with SSE Renewables.
  • Advised WestRock on the tax aspects of its agreed combination with Smurfit Kappa to create Smurfit WestRock. The deal is set to create a global leader in sustainable packaging.
  • Advised ORIX Aviation in connection with the 100% acquisition of an aircraft portfolio from Merx Aviation.
  • Advised Goldman backed, iSpot on the Irish aspects of its acquisition of 605, a next-generation measurement and attribution company.
  • Numerous Irish PLCs with managing tax in a multilateral environment including in particular; advising on best practice in terms of managing tax governance, assisting Boards with setting tax strategy, assisting with effective tax rate management, and advising on how best to manage tax risk including compliance risk, structural risk and reputational risk.
